Font Conference

I love this video showing a League of Justice-style gathering a various typefaces personified.

Bonus points for Comic Sans represented by a tight-wearing, dandy super hero and Arial Narrow as a southern redneck.

I love the look going on over at Mix Turtle. A neat logotype is really taken up a notch by the clever illustration of one tough looking turtle.

The service seems to be bombarded with traffic right now, but I’m anxious to give it a try.

Design Magazine Back Issues

July 19th, 2008

I have been de-cluttering my office and found some old design magazines that some of you might be interested in.

First up is Dustin Amery Hostetler’s (Upso) amazing art and design ’zine, Faesthetic. I have issues #1, #2, and #3 available. These are sold-out, limited, numbered editions — issue one is one of 250 only! Upso is a great artist and this is a fun magazine.

Some of you may remember Emigre magazine which was pretty progressive in the design world once upon a time. Almost all of these are sold out and unavailable directly from Emigre (and the ones that are go for $50). I have two auctions:

Issues 46-59 + catalogs

Issues 60-64 (the CD ones)

OKC NBA

July 9th, 2008

So, my previous post about the new Toby Keith inspired Oklahoma City NBA logo has been pretty popular with visitors coming from all 50 states and several countries.

ESPN page 2 writer, Paul Lukas, has posted a Design contest: Oklahoma City needs name, logo, unis. So I’ve put the big guy on a home and away jersey and submitted it. Hopefully it’ll end up on ESPN.com for all to enjoy.

Here’s the graphic for those who are curious

The NBA Comes to Oklahoma City

July 3rd, 2008

Oklahoma City is a buzz this morning with the news that we’ve finally landed our own NBA franchise. Within hours of the announcement this leaked image showing the new team name and mascot was discovered:

That’s right the new team will be called the “Oklahoma City I Love this Basketball Team!”s. In a snippet from the press release leaked with the image, I Love this Basketball Team owner, Clay Bennett commented on the selection of Oklahoma celebrity Toby Keith as the team’s mascot:

“Toby is a local legend. With his love of chest hair and barbeque, Toby represents the hopes and dreams of Oklahomans and, indeed all Americans. I can’t think of a more meaty face to represent what is sure to be America’s team.”Clay Bennett, owner, Oklahoma City I Love this Basketball Team!

Awesome notes.

SXSW NotesOn of the really great things the surprised me at SXSW this year was the renewed art of note taking. Each of the keynotes featured two information designers drawing beautiful graphic versions of the presentations on huge pages. I snapped this image of one of them.

Today after returning home, I see this link to Mike Rohde’s gorgeous notes from the conference.

My design professor in college was adamant that we keep a sketchbook (and I do, to this day) and she stressed that your sketchbook should be more than sloppy notes, but should look as if an “artist had been there”. These exemplify that idea.
